A doula is someone who provides non-medical support to women and their families during labour and childbirth, and also the postpartum period recognizing childbirth as a key experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. Doulas:
- help you find the information you need to make informed decisions.
- about the birth of your baby.
- own comfort level.
- experience at home or in the hospital.
At Surrey Mama Midwifery, we advocate for doula care. We have great doulas working with us. Pleas Let us know if you are interested to have one.
I’ve been a doula for 17 years . I have 4 boys ranging from the ages of 22 to 8. I love supporting families through their birth journey. With support from a doula families can do amazing things. I have served on the Doula Association board, Been part of South Community birth, Mentored new doulas through the Community Birth program, and am a breastfeeding consultant. Have attended over 100 births all unique and special. I love being a doula.
Heather L. DeVries
My name is Heather and as a DONA certified Birth doula for 30 years, I have never tired of the amazing, challenging life changing journey a doula embarks on with each labouring mother and her partner. A background in counselling and chaplaincy has allowed me to support each parent with greater awareness and understanding. Work in third world countries has additionally given me the skills for supporting parents of many ethnicities. Providing physical comfort measures, emotional support, information so each parent can make informed choices for themselves and advocacy when needed, continue to be the cornerstones of my doula practice. I enjoy helping a partner finding and nuturing their unique role in the labour support. Team work, works. And I LOVE homebirths.
I am currently providing labour support to those who would be delivering at home or hospital in Surrey, White Rock, Langley.
My husband, grown children, grandchildren and a Border Collie provide me with much love and let’s call it, entertainment, when I am not supporting a labouring mother. My absence at family gathering or social events is explained by the phrase, “Somebody is having a birthday.”
